CertainTeed Landmark vs Landmark PRO: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Your roofer hands you two options from the same manufacturer, in the same product family, and one costs more. Landmark or Landmark PRO. The obvious question is what the extra money buys.

We install CertainTeed on every roof, so we have the spec sheets in front of us more often than most people would want to.

Start With What Is Identical

Before the differences, the overlap. These two shingles share more than the price gap suggests.

Warranty. Both carry a lifetime limited transferable warranty. Both include 10 years of SureStart coverage on materials and labor. The upgrade does not buy you a longer warranty on the shingle itself.

Wind. Both carry a 15-year, 110 mph wind-resistance warranty, upgrading to 160 mph when the roof goes on with CertainTeed starter shingles and CertainTeed hip and ridge caps as a complete system. Same figures, same condition.

Impact. Both are UL 2218 Class 3 impact rated.

Fire. Both carry a UL Class A fire resistance rating, the highest.

If somebody tells you Landmark PRO is rated for stronger wind or better hail resistance, they are working from a sales sheet rather than CertainTeed's published ratings. On those two measures the shingles are the same.

The Three Things That Differ

Weight

Landmark PRO is heavier and thicker. CertainTeed describes it as a multi-layer design built around that added weight.

Weight does things that a ratings table does not capture. A heavier shingle lies flatter, handles a little rougher in wind before the seal is tested, and holds its shape better on a hot roof deck in August. None of that changes the warranty figure. It changes how the roof behaves.

Color

Landmark PRO uses the Max Def color palette. Max Def appears across the PRO range and is absent from standard Landmark.

Max Def blends more color granules into each shingle, which produces deeper contrast and more variation across the roof. From the street, a Max Def roof has more depth and less of a flat, uniform tone. On a house where the roof is a large share of what you see, that difference is easy to spot.

That is the reason most of our customers who upgrade choose to. Not the specs. The look.

Algae Warranty

Standard Landmark carries a 25-year StreakFighter algae-resistance warranty. Landmark PRO carries 30 years.

Both use copper-infused granules to fight the black streaking that shows up on roofs across Hickory through our humid summers. The PRO version warrants that protection five years longer.

Five years is a real difference, though a smaller one than the price gap usually implies.

What Neither One Changes

Both of these shingles will sit on your roof for the same length of time in this climate.

Across everything we work on in western North Carolina, roofs last 15 to 25 years. That is the range we see, with our summers, our freeze and thaw cycles, and the hail that comes through most years.

CertainTeed does not publish an expected lifespan in years for either shingle, and a lifetime limited warranty is not a lifespan figure. It prorates down after an initial period and covers manufacturing defects rather than ordinary wear.

So the upgrade does not buy you a longer-lasting roof. It buys weight and appearance.

What the Upgrade Costs

Landmark PRO costs more per square than standard Landmark. The gap depends on your roof's size, its pitch, how many valleys and penetrations it has, and what material prices are doing that month, so a percentage quoted without seeing your roof is a guess.

The useful way to frame it: the upgrade is a smaller line item than most homeowners expect, and a smaller one than the jump to a luxury shingle. On a straightforward roof it often lands within the range people are already prepared to spend.

Ask for both numbers on the same estimate, for the same roof, from the same crew. Comparing a PRO quote from one company against a standard Landmark quote from another tells you nothing about the shingles and everything about the two companies' pricing.

When the Upgrade Earns Its Money

Landmark PRO is worth paying for in a few specific situations.

Your roof is a big part of the house. Steep pitches, large visible planes, prominent gables. The Max Def depth shows on those.

You care about how the color sits against your siding and stone. The PRO range gives you more to work with, and matching matters more on some houses than others.

You are staying put. Somebody planning twenty years in the house weighs the appearance upgrade differently from somebody selling in three.

Standard Landmark is the right call for most homes here. It carries the same warranty, the same wind rating, and the same impact rating, and it is the shingle we put on most roofs in Hickory and around Lake Norman. Choosing it is not settling.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Decide

Four questions surface the real difference between two estimates:

Which line is quoted, Landmark or Landmark PRO? "Architectural shingles" on a quote sheet is not an answer.

Are the starter course and hip and ridge caps CertainTeed? That decides whether the 160 mph wind figure applies to your roof or stays a number in a brochure.

Can I see a full-size sample against my house? Anyone confident in the product will bring one out.

What does the ventilation plan look like? If nobody has raised ventilation, nobody has looked properly.

An estimate that answers those four is comparable to another one that does. A price and the words "architectural shingles" is not.

The Part That Matters More Than Either Choice

A heavier shingle installed badly will fail before a standard one installed well.

Ventilation that works. Flashing done right at every wall and penetration. Correct nailing. A real starter course. Hip and ridge caps from the same system, which is also what makes that 160 mph wind figure apply at all.
